IAEA-S-4 aims at calibrations on the VCDT scale for δ34S.

IAEA-S-4 is elemental sulfur derived from natural gas and was prepared by E. Roth, (Centre d’Etudes Nucléaires de Saclay, France). It served as international reference material for more than 20 years, before its distribution was terminated by IAEA because of doubts about its isotopic homogeneity. However, later studies have demonstrated its homogeneity and suitability as reference material [1,2].

The δ34S isotopic value of IAEA-S-4 is based on interlaboratory comparisons. The material is often used for δ33S calibrations, but this value is not officially agreed.
