NBS-28 serves as the primary refence material (primary calibrator) for silicon δ29Si- δ30Si measurements defining the zero point of the δ-scale [1,2] and its 30Si/29Si/28Si ratios. In addition, NBS-28 serves as the refence material for δ18O in silicates.
Quartz sand for preparing NBS 28 was obtained by I. Friedman, U.S. Geological Survey from Corning Glass Company as. It was washed with acid to remove impurities and the fraction between 100 µm and 177 µm was separated and packed in 0.5 g units.
